Our group conducts research in computer methods for design of parts, materials and manufacturing processes, with technical emphasis on multi-physics topology optimization and shape optimization. Current activities are centered on the following research inquiries:
- fundamental research on 1) advancing multi-physics topology optimization and shape optimization methods to exploit geometric and material flexibility of additive manufacturing to realize structures and materials with improved performances and unprecedented capabilities, 2) developing data-driven machine learning based computational design methods;
- applied research on computational design and manufacturing of energy-related components and systems including thermal management and energy storage.
Research in our group has been supported by various government funding agencies such as NSF, ONR, AFOSR, ARO, and ARPA-E as well as industry sponsors such as GE, UTRC and Sony.
